• Shelley wrote and was instrumental in passing a ballot measure creating San Francisco's pioneering Ethics Commission.

• Shelley fought for and won significant consumer protections such as a pioneering "Lemon Law" to protect car buyers.

• Shelley enacted the California Nursing Home Reform Act of 2000, the most comprehensive and significant nursing home legislation in a generation and passed significant elder abuse reporting, training and prevention legislation.

• This year, once again, Kevin Shelley is leading the charge to protect Californians from gun violence.

• Shelley wrote one of the nation's toughest local clinic protection ordinances to safeguard a woman's right to choose.

• Shelley is a long-time champion of environmental safety laws for California's classrooms. He enacted the Healthy Schools Act of 2000, which grants parents and teachers the right to know about pesticide use in their schools.

• Shelley pioneered red-light-runner and pedestrian safety legislation to make the streets safer for walkers, bicyclists, and motorists. Calmer streets mean more civil communities.

• Shelley wrote comprehensive pollutant-monitoring laws, restored funding for the California Clean Air Act and authored the Marine Life Protection Act. In recognition of these efforts, the California League of Conservation Voters described him as an "environmental leader for the future."

• Shelley co-authored fair employment and housing legislation that has been declared one of the most significant civil rights bills to be enacted in years.
