First elected to the Assembly in 1996, Kevin Shelley's leadership was recognized early by Democratic colleagues, choosing him to chair the Democratic Caucus, and then -- after only two-years in office -- Majority Leader of the California Assembly.

And legislators weren't alone in recognizing Shelley's leadership.
He was named Legislator of the Year four times in his career -- by three different organizations, on three different issues. His successful efforts to promote recycling won the honor from Californians Against Waste; his record on behalf of consumers and seniors earned California Consumer Federation's "Most Valuable Player" in the State Legislature; and for his tireless efforts to defend reproductive rights and protect women's health clinics, Kevin Shelley was twice so honored by the California Abortion Rights Action League.
And they weren't alone in their praise, either.
Hailed as an "environmental leader for the future" by the California League of Conservation Voters, Kevin Shelley led the fight to protect California's coastline and beaches; to reduce the threat of toxic waste and pollutants; and to restore funding to the Clean Air Act.
He won a 100 percent rating from the Children's Advocacy Institute for his advocacy on behalf of children, education, public safety and working families. And was recognized by the Senior Action Network and California Senior Legislature for his work to improve health care and reform nursing homes.
Today, as a candidate for Secretary of State, Kevin Shelley is bringing his leadership to a critical cause for our democracy itself: a long-overdue, much-needed overhaul of California's voting system.
