As a San Francisco Supervisor, he led the drive to make local government more open, more accountable and more responsive -- and he authored one of the strongest local Sunshine Laws in the nation.
He wrote the ballot measure to create the San Francisco Ethics Commission -- and won voter approval for reforms now considered a model for municipal governments.
In the State Assembly, he has been a leading fighter for consumer protections -- from California's pioneering "Lemon Law" to the most significant nursing home reform in a generation. And this year he's on the frontlines again -- to reduce gun violence, protect our environment, and bring our voting system into the 21st Century.
